Chris Brown will not serve prison time for beating a music producer with a tequila bottle in London. The 37-year-old singer received an eight-month sentence on Monday, which is suspended for one year.

Brown pleaded guilty in July to affray, a charge involving the use or threat of unlawful violence. The incident occurred in February 2023 on the dance floor of Tape, a private club in the Mayfair neighborhood. He faced a maximum penalty of three years in prison for the attack on Abraham Diaw, his former friend.

Judge Tony Baumgartner at Southwark Crown Court noted the danger of the act. Court video showed Brown striking Diaw twice in the head with a glass bottle. Baumgartner stated that the repeated use of a bottle aimed at the head carried a risk of more serious injury than the head and knee wounds Diaw sustained. Diaw was discharged from the hospital following the attack.

The judge cited Brown’s guilty plea and stable employment as reasons for the suspended sentence. Baumgartner also pointed to Brown’s charity work and clean record in recent years. These factors outweighed Brown’s history of previous convictions, including a 2009 felony assault of Rihanna.

Prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe argued that Brown played a leading role in the fight. She said the footage clearly showed Brown moving first. Defense lawyer Sallie Bennett-Jenkins countered that the attack lasted no more than 20 seconds. She stated that Brown offered a profound apology to everyone present at the club.

Brown’s vocal coach and friend, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray. Akinlolu received a four-month suspended sentence. Prosecutors dropped additional charges against Brown, including assault and having an offensive weapon, in exchange for his guilty plea.

The sentencing follows the cancellation of a scheduled Oct. 17 concert at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Brown and Usher canceled that performance and other U.S. dates citing the health of the touring company. The tour is set to resume in Atlanta on Nov. 5. Brown left the United Kingdom after the brawl but was arrested in May 2025 at a Manchester hotel while on bail of 5 million pounds. Fans cheered him outside the courthouse on Monday, while one onlooker shouted about his history of violence.
