James Vandenberg was released from jail on Sunday after securing a $100,000 surety bond, according to a spokesman for the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office. He had been arrested on Saturday at a Wichita State University dorm hall by university police.
The arrest marks the second alleged sexual attack reported on campus in one month. Vandenberg faces a charge of rape. The spokesman noted that more details about the specific circumstances leading to the charges were not yet available.
Wichita State University campus police are currently investigating the case. This incident follows the arrest of 18-year-old Aaron Christian on Oct. 12. Christian was charged with aggravated battery and rape and was also released the next day after posting a $100,000 surety bond.
University police are handling the investigation into Christian’s case as well. After his arrest, a university spokesperson stated that the school takes all reports of sexual assault seriously. The spokesperson added that the university is committed to following all applicable laws and student-support processes.
Campus police records indicate that before the two October allegations, the last reported sexual assault occurred on Feb. 28 at The Flats, an on-campus apartment complex. A separate allegation of sexual battery was made on Feb. 18 at Shocker Studios, the building housing the school of digital arts. In that February incident, a 20-year-old man was arrested.
