Arizona offensive coordinator Seth Doege has transformed the career of quarterback Noah Fifita since joining the Wildcats staff in 2025. Fifita, who previously struggled with consistency, now leads the Big 12 with a 74.2 completion percentage and a 174 passer rating. His resurgence has propelled Arizona to a 6-1 record and a No. 22 national ranking.
The improvement is stark against Fifita's 2024 season, when the Wildcats dropped from 10 wins to four. During that year, only three wide receivers recorded 20 or more receptions, and the passing offense fell to No. 42 in the nation. Fifita threw for 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. In 2025, those numbers shifted to 29 touchdowns and six interceptions, marking his best statistical year as a starter.
Doege, a former Texas Tech quarterback recruited by Mike Leach, arrived at Arizona with a clear plan. He recognized that Fifita, despite being undersized, possessed elite vision and decision-making skills. Doege noted that the quarterback's batted-ball rate was comparable to taller players, meaning his height did not limit his effectiveness. The coordinator focused on providing detailed answers in game planning rather than limiting the quarterback's range.
The two built a personal connection based on shared values and a similar approach to the game. Doege stated that he and Fifita view the game through the same lens. This bond extended to their families, with the two often socializing together. Doege recalled an instance where he paid for a meal for Fifita and his fiancé before they arrived, demonstrating the depth of their mutual support.
Arizona head coach Brent Brennan praised Fifita's consistent performance, arguing that the national narrative overlooks his talent. Brennan stated that Fifita's level of play speaks to the trust the staff has in him. The coach emphasized that Fifita is one of only 11 Power Four quarterbacks averaging at least 9.0 yards per attempt on at least 32 attempts per game.
Fifita’s five-game winning streak included a 23-7 victory over rival Arizona State. During a four-game stretch in October, he threw 11 touchdowns without an interception. This run of form helped the Wildcats re-enter the Big 12 title conversation after a period of uncertainty following the departure of previous head coach Jedd Fisch.
The Wildcats face No. 13 Texas Tech on Saturday in Lubbock. For Doege, the game holds personal significance as he returns to his alma mater for the first time as an opposing coach. His parents and in-laws still reside in the area, and he plans to support Fifita’s efforts to secure a win on the field where he played.
Arizona is 15-5 over its last 20 games but has not won a conference title since 2014. The team seeks to use this matchup to solidify its position in the conference race. Doege expressed a desire to see Fifita succeed in Lubbock, calling the prospect special given their personal history.
