The 2026-27 college basketball season begins with legal uncertainty defining team rosters rather than traditional scouting reports. ESPN analysts Jeff Borzello and Myron Medcalf divided 75 programs into 11 tiers, reflecting a landscape where court rulings determine whether specific players can compete. This structure acknowledges that the gap between a team's potential ceiling and floor has widened due to dozens of active lawsuits regarding player eligibility.

Florida, Duke, and Illinois occupy the top tier as national championship favorites. Florida retains four starters from its 2025 title team, including Thomas Haugh and Alex Condon. Denzel Aberdeen is currently eligible after an injunction, though his status may change. Duke brings back four key players from its previous No. 1 ranked squad and added Wisconsin guard John Blackwell. Illinois retained five core players, including David Mirkovic, aiming to repeat its Final Four run.

The second tier includes Arizona, UConn, Texas, and Michigan State as Final Four contenders. Arizona lost Jaden Bradley but retains Big 12 preseason player of the year Motiejus Krivas and five-star recruit Caleb Holt. UConn signed Braylon Mullins to a new contract after losing its top three scorers. Texas added No. 1 recruit Marcus Spears Jr. and transferred David Punch and Isaiah Johnson. Michigan State relies on point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. to compensate for the loss of its starting frontcourt.

Tier III features Kansas, Louisville, Missouri, and Miami as second-weekend threats. Kansas' roster strength depends on the eligibility of Trey Kaufman-Renn, who received a court injunction for a sixth year. Louisville faces questions about Seth Trimble's availability. Missouri's outlook shifts dramatically based on whether Mark Mitchell remains eligible. Miami waits for a ruling on Malik Reneau's fifth year, which would elevate the Hurricanes' status.

A dedicated tier addresses teams in eligibility limbo, including Texas Tech and St. John's. Texas Tech awaits decisions on Darrion Williams, Donovan Atwell, and Jamichael Stillwell. Atwell's trial is not scheduled until June, making him likely to remain eligible through the season. St. John's has three players pending decisions, with Rick Pitino potentially starting at least two of them. Other schools in this group include Gonzaga, BYU, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, and LSU.

The remaining tiers categorize teams from those capable of winning a tournament game to potential Cinderella candidates. Purdue sits in the fifth tier, narrowly missing the preseason top 25 despite Matt Painter's coaching track record. The rankings extend down to mid-major clubs that analysts believe can win a game in the NCAA tournament, providing a comprehensive map of the season's competitive landscape as legal outcomes continue to unfold.
